2024 Final

Exploring the loss of innocence and development through aging, changes of mentality and pespective

Inquiry Statement

Master Artist: Tina Garrett
Current Artist: Marci Oleszkiewicz

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: I grew up around a lof of livestock, so this piece shows the innocence associated with that with both a small child as well as a young calf portraying the concept of innocence, youth, purity, and kindness. I used bright colors on the head of the calf intending to create almost an angelic feeling.

Materials: Acrylic to show intricate, perfected details, on wood to continue the rural concept.

Processes: Contrasting paints to emphasize highlights and details

*Selected Work*

Master Artist: Botticelli (For Hair)
Current Artist: Paul Cadden

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: This piece is meant to support the piece above, focusing on the details in the hair and the flow/movement. A young child looking away depicts a not complete understanding of what a child may be thinking, showing that there is a gap between the mentality seen in children versus adults.

Materials: Graphite on paper to show depth and shadow of the hair, as well as details to help revise my graphite skills.

Processes: The bow was created first to choose a point that all of the hair would be flowing towards, somewhat of a focal point.

Master Artist: Hulis Mavruk
Current Artist: Prince Neti

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: The magnifying glass is meant to show how different a child's perspective is from an adults, suggesting that this is a development with age, The concept is meant to be that the child sees the world as simple, beautiful, and perfect, but there is so much more to it.

Materials: Graphite to illustrate details and complexity of Real life, Colored pencils to create an emphasis on the happiness and simplicity of the child's perspective.

Processes: The Graphite drawn first to provide an initial stark contrast, followed by the colored pencils for a joyous simplicity

*Selected Work*

Master Artist: Berini
Current Artist: Diego Fazio

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: The angel wings portray the purity and innocence of a child, which later develops into something different, however it is meant to capture the beauty before society brings down an angel through the cruelty of the world. The child has a sad expression on her face as to show her sadness of the last flower growing amidst the concrete. This will be for a future Selected Work of a Broken Angel.

Materials: Graphite on Paper to show the deeper values as well as the lighter, softer values while still maintaining a level of attention to detail.

Processes: The concrete is darker to emphasize the evil and disappointment with the loss of life and killing of nature, whereas the wings are lighter and softer to create an angelic portrayal of soft kindness.

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: To support a future Selected Works Piece, this piece is meant to improve my skills with colors through experimentation. Hands can be used as a symbol of love and connection in art.

Materials: Acrylic on Canvas to highlight the sharp, yet soft lighting on the hand.

Processes: Layering with multiple shades of paint to achieve the blended appearance and a softness that shines through.

Master Artist: Norman Rockwell
Current Artist: Paul Lung

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: This piece supports the first piece of the boy and the cow, showing a connection between an animal and a child, fostering the thought of youthful connections without any fear but rather, only love. This continues on with the idea of livestock being a very important part of my life growing up, as this is a photo of me as a child laying on a pig.

Materials: The graphite on paper allows for depth in values, creating an emphasis on the places left with lighter values, such as the face and body of the child.

Processes: Revising and improving my skills with graphite as well as facial expressions of children in positions of rest.

Master Artist: Adonna Khare
Current Artist: Cath Riley

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: This piece is a planning piece for the first piece of the boy and the cow, helping me to find inspiration for the composition and what the actual animal would be. This, similar to the Selected work that it is associated with, is meant to show the youthful connection between baby animals and children, as life is simple and loving for both of them.

Materials: Graphite on paper to map out the initial ideas and understand what my next choice of action should be.

Processes: Lighter pencil marks to work out steps, then darkened slightly on the contour lines to solidify the intent.

Master Artist: Michelangelo
Current Artist: Ann Kullberg

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: This piece is a support piece for the future piece of a young child holding the hand of an adult. The Selected Work will be very similar to this but likely larger, more complete, and on a paper meant specifically for colored pencils so that it doesn't rip like this one did.

Materials: Colored pencils for the vibrant colors to suggest love between the child and the adult.

Processes: This was somewhat experimental, as it was in my sketchbook, helped me revise by showing that I need to use different paper because the colored pencils ripped the paper from the pressure. The layering of colored pencils to create translucent layers of skin and a multitude of colors showing through.

Master Artist: Sunarto P. R.
Current Artist: Dan Thompson

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas: This piece is meant to expand on the expectation of sweetness of a child. showing the seemingly ideal child in an ideal scenario of beauty and perfection. through the innocent appearance of the clothes of a little farm girl. This piece is meant to support the first piece by working on a child's emotions as well as experimenting with the straw hat.

Materials: Graphite to focus on the overall composition and details without being distracted by the impact of color.

Processes: Depth in the eyes and lips to draw the viewer's attention, cross-hatching  to create the appearance of a woven straw hat.

Master Artist: Michelangelo
Current Artist: Käthe Kollwitz

How this fits into Inquiry & Ideas:  This piece supports a future piece that will follow a similar composition but with the clothing removed. This piece is meant to signify holding on to youth and the love that connects the young and old, not exclusive to only parent/child relationships. Furthermore, this connection shows that their isn't an unbridgeable gap between the young and the old as suggested in one of the previous support pieces for a different Selected Work.

Materials: Graphite on paper to show the somberness of the piece and to help map out the shading of the final selected work.

Processes: Experimentation with cross-hatching to explore other techniques shade graphite and other materials.
